  • IAAF Profile: Jeremiah Jakpa

Jeremiah Jakpa’s dalliance with Track and Field only began in 2014 after winning the 100m, 200m, 4x100m and Long Jump events in his last year in secondary school, prompting his dad to take him to the stadium to commence training, having noticed his talent.

Jakpa finished 4th in his first National Juniors (D.K. Olukoya Championships) in 2015 and was spotted by Making of Champions (MoC) at the Benin Auditions in September 2015 where he caught the attention of all the coaches at the meet.

The sprinter’s first outing as an MoC Athlete was at the 2016 Nigerian Junior Trials where he won his 100m heat in a Personal Best (PB) of 10.82s, before placing 3rd in his 200m heat in 22.63s. He subsequently relocated to Lagos and has improved tremendously under the tutelage of Olympic Medallist Deji Aliu.

Jakpa has all the trappings of a phenomenal athlete, having posted eye catching performances at Top Sprinter 2016 in Lagos where he stormed to victory in the Junior category of the sprint double! Jakpa maintained an unbeaten run in all of his races and totally dominated the 100m/200m, returning times of 11.05 and 21.97s respectively.

It is therefore no surprise that he was one of the first beneficiaries of MoC’s Student-Athlete Scholarship, and is being sponsored by Oil and Gas company, ARCO Group.

Jakpa’s career took a turn for the better in 2017 where he stormed to two national medals. His first silverware was gotten at the 2017 National U-20 Championships where he finished 3rd in the men’s 100m with a PB of 10.81s.

A month later, he was MoC’s best performer at the National Trials held in Abuja, racing to a Bronze medal in the men’s 200m final where he clocked a PB of 21.21s. Jakpa, who came to the championship with a PB if 21.81s, lowered the mark to 21.51s in the heats, and 21.37s in the semis. He also clocked a lifetime best of 10.66s in the 100m heats at the same competition.

The 2018 Athletics Season was a defining one for the talented sprinter who started the season with a PB of 10.49s posted at the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) Golden League in Kaduna in November 2017. While racing at the MoC Grand Prix in June 2018, he clocked a wind-aided time of 10.25s to finish 2nd in the 100m, and also settled for 2nd in the 200m in 21.13s.

Following his impressive performances in the course of the season, Jakpa made his international debut for Nigeria at the African Senior Championships held in Asaba, Delta State. While competing in the 200m heats, he smashed his PB in the event, running inside 21s for the first time in his career to post 20.87s. He made the semis, where he placed 5th in his race.

Jakpa ended his 2018 season with a PB in the 100m while competing at the National Sports Festival in Abuja. He stunned a star-studded field to win his heat and semis, clocking 10.46s and then a PB of 10.32s respectively. He narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing 4th in 10.34s in the final. He is definitely one to watch out for!
