The bid by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) to work with organizations that can help improve the fortunes of the sport in the country is beginning to yield fruits as the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) has agreed to partner with AFN.

During a visit to NIGCOMSAT in Abuja on Tuesday, AFN President Ibrahim Shehu Gusau appealed for assistance in the areas of sponsorship and ICT, saying all hands must be on deck to take Athletics to a level Nigerians can be proud of.

He said despite the challenges of poor funding in the midst of very high expectations, the Board is working hard with  stakeholders to nurture, develop and return more Nigerian athletes to podium finishes in competitions.

Managing Director of Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited, Abimbola Alale disclosed that the first fruit of the partnership will be  reaped  during the forthcoming AFN Delegates Conference in Abuja where the new Logo, Constitution and road map of the AFN will be presented to the public.

She expressed sadness with the present state of Nigerian Athletics but quickly noted that it can be salvaged with hard work, commitment and dedication on the part of all stakeholders especially, due to the importance of sports in sustaining the peace and unity of Nigeria.

Executive Director, Marketing and Business Development of NIGCOMSAT Barrister Samson Osagie revealed that they will explore areas of involvement at the 2018 Confederation of Africa Athletics (CAA) Championships in Asaba to support the AFN’s plan of hosting to win the championship, which holds from July 30 to August 5 in Delta State.

The Congress of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria will hold at Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja from November 15 to 16, 2017. Delegates from the 36 States of the Country and the FCT are expected to attend as well as critical stakeholders.
