Ojo passed away on August 7th in Serbia having a trials with Partizan Belgrade

Nigerian Basketball player Michael Olalekan Ojo tragically passed away on Friday after suffering a heart attack while having an individual training practice at the Partizan Belgrade indoor hall in Serbia.

Ojo was said to have collapsed and was rushed in an ambulance to the hospital, but he had sadly died before the doctors could do anything to try and remedy the situation.

“With big sadness BC Crvena zvezda inform that our former player Michael Ojo passed away in Belgrade. He was 27 years old. Great member of our club, champion, great teammate, great man…Rest in peace, Michael.” His former club said in a statement.

The 7 ft 1 Center played two seasons for the Serbian side, Crvena Zvezda, playing over 100 games for them in both their local league and the European competitions.

He was without a club as at June 30 this year, and was having a trials with Partizan Belgrade with the aim of signing a deal with them before the unfortunate incident.

Ojo was initially drafted as one of the players to represent Nigeria at the 2011 AfroBasket championships in Madagascar, but eventually did not make the team.

Athletics coverage was a discovery, having to move away from regularly writing about Football. Although it was initially daunting, but now being an authority in it makes the past effort worthwhile. From travelling on the same international flight with Nigerian athletes, to knowing you could easily interview: World Record holder Tobi Amusan, then Ese Brume, I have cut my teeth in this beat earning the trust of Athletics sources.
