Canada’s Derek Drouin has won men’s High Jump after clearing a height of 2.38m to win GOLD on Day 5 of Athletics at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Drouin was the only one to clear 2.38m with other competitors all failing their attempts at that height. Having opened up at 2.20m, he had a clean slate up to 2.40m, missing his first attempt and subsequently withdrawing having secured the win.

Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim won Silver having cleared his best height of 2.36m and missing all three at 2.38m.

Meanwhile Bohdan Bondarenko missed out on Silver and settled for Bronze after passing 2.36m and attempting 2.38m. Having failed twice he tried to risk his last attempt at 2.40m, but failed it and finished 3rd.

Four years ago in London, Drouin won joint Bronze with Barshim. He added a World title in Beijing last year, and now he is an Olympic Champion.

Athletics coverage was a discovery, having to move away from regularly writing about Football. Although it was initially daunting, but now being an authority in it makes the past effort worthwhile. From travelling on the same international flight with Nigerian athletes, to knowing you could easily interview: World Record holder Tobi Amusan, then Ese Brume, I have cut my teeth in this beat earning the trust of Athletics sources. Formerly the Content Manager-Sports at Ringier media Nigeria, Chris is a Senior Sports writer, Photographer & Community manager at Making of Champions.
