Another World Record (WR) fell on Day 3 of Track and Field at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, making it the second time in just three days that spectators at the Estádio Olímpico João Havelange were treated to the experience of a lifetime.

Reigning 400m World Champion Wayde Van Niekerk added the Olympic title to his tally, obliterating Michael Johnson’s 17-year old World Record to set a new mark of 43.03s, becoming the first ever African in Olympic history to win the 400m.

The second African representative in the race, Botswana’s youngster, Karabo Sibanda once again set another Personal Best (PB) to finish 5th in 44.25s.

In another historic race, multiple World Record holder Usain Bolt became the first man in history to win three successive Olympic titles in the 100m, once again cementing his legendary status as the greatest athlete ever, winning GOLD with 9.81s.

Triple Jump queen Caterine Ibarguen finally claimed the Olympic title that had long eluded her, exerting revenge over Kazhakstan’s Olga Rypakova who won GOLD at London 2012.

The top athletes in the women’s 400m – Allyson Felix, Shaunae Miller and Shericka Jackson qualified for the Monday’s final after competing in the semis on Sunday evening.

Genzebe Dibaba will be aiming to win her first Olympic medal in the women’s 1500m as she joined rival Faith Kipyegon in qualifying for the final of the event.
