It was a mixed super packed Sunday for Team Nigeria on Day 2 of the Rio 2016 Olympics, not just in the men’s Singles Table Tennis event, but in all the sports the country participated in.

With Segun Toriola drawing huge applause across the globe for his impressive showing on Day 1 and even going to be honoured by the International Table Tennis Federation, the veteran seven-time Olympian was beaten in round 2 on Sunday.

However, what Nigeria missed in Toriola’s passage, they gained in Aruna Quadri who not only progressed from Round 2, he stunned the world ranked number 7 to make Round 4 of the men’s Singles event.

In the Water Sports, there wasn’t much to cheer with the duo of Jonathan Akinyemi and Rechel Tonjor not making the next round.

Meanwhile in Football, Dream Team VI qualified for the quarter-finals with victory over Sweden, but in Basketball D’Tigers lost their opening match to Argentina.

Athletics coverage was a discovery, having to move away from regularly writing about Football. Although it was initially daunting, but now being an authority in it makes the past effort worthwhile. From travelling on the same international flight with Nigerian athletes, to knowing you could easily interview: World Record holder Tobi Amusan, then Ese Brume, I have cut my teeth in this beat earning the trust of Athletics sources.
