Doreen Amata while competing for Nigeria at the 2015 World Championships

Doreen Amata is back to winning ways as she last weekend won the High Jump at the Tiger Track Classic meet in Auburn, Alabama in the USA.

Her best mark of 1.86m was enough for her to secure the win, defeating Maya Pressely who cleared a height of 1.83m to finish 2nd, with Ann Dudley coming 3rd after scaling 1.80m.

Amata had a good start to the season which saw her setting a new National Indoor Record of 1.93m at the Banska Bystrica meet in Slovakia. She went on to finish 9th at the World indoor Championships with a clearance of 1.89m.

With so many international competitions taking place this year, this could be Amata’s chance of matching or even doing better than her outdoor National Record of 1.95m.

The former African Games champion is currently in the United States preparing for the season ahead, and will be competing in many meets so as to be in shape for the African Athletics Championship in Durban and the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Athletics coverage was a discovery, having to move away from regularly writing about Football. Although it was initially daunting, but now being an authority in it makes the past effort worthwhile. From travelling on the same international flight with Nigerian athletes, to knowing you could easily interview: World Record holder Tobi Amusan, then Ese Brume, I have cut my teeth in this beat earning the trust of Athletics sources.
