Born on 22nd October 1996, Moyo Badejo is a multi-talented athlete whose potential was noticed at a tender age as she participated in various sports before finally settling for Athletics. Her dedication to Athletics was noticed by her parents when she bought her first pair of spikes with savings from her lunch money.
Soon enough, she became a sensation in Lagos State and at the youthful age of 16 in 2010, she was adopted into the ‘Adopt a Talent Programme’ by the former Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Raji Fashola.
Making of Champions (MoC) first took note of her prowess at the 2015 Top Sprinter Lagos Auditions where she came 2nd in the 100m. She then raced to the sprint double at the next Audition in Ibadan. That was the point it became evident both to Badejo and the coaches there that she was one to watch out for.
She competed for the University of Lagos (Unilag) at various events and in 2017, won four medals (2 Silver and 2 Bronze) for her school at the Nigerian University Games (NUGA), Makurdi, despite the late arrival of the Unilag team, which led to her missing the 100m.
At the 2018 Commonwealth Games Trials, she raced to a Personal Best (PB) of 24.45s to win her heat, and then settled for 4th place in the final. Badejo also made the final of the sprint double at the MoC Grand Prix in June.
Badejo is MoC’s first graduate athlete, and she hopes to counsel her younger counterparts on how to be effective student-athletes in Nigeria, having studied Guidance and Counselling.
“I chose to study Guidance and Counseling because I wanted a situation where I could tell the younger ones that I have participated in a lot of sporting events and I was still able to combine it with my education – so combining both was by determination”, she said.
We surely can’t wait for the best Moyo has to offer in the world of Athletics.
