The Super Eagles of Nigeria will go head-to-head against the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone on matchday five of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Sierra Leone will play host to the Eagles at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Monrovia, Liberia, on Sunday evening.
Nigeria could punch their ticket to the continental showpiece as they are just one point away from securing a spot at the big event. On the other hand, the hosts will need to win the encounter to keep their qualification hopes alive.
The three-time African champions began the qualifying series on a good note, pipping Sierra Leone 2-1 at home before demolishing Sao Tome and Principe 10-0 at the Stade Adrar.
Jose Peseiro’s men suffered a humiliating 1-0 loss to Guinea Bissau back in March but fought back in the reserve fixture courtesy of Moses Simon’s spot kick early in the game.
Sierra Leone enters the contest with a mixed record in the tournament, having won just one game, lost one, and drawn two.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
The Eagles have avoided defeat to the Leone Stars in all of their previous six meetings, winning on four occasions.
In their total 17 encounters, the Eagles have emerged victorious in ten and drawn five, suffering only two losses. Sierra Leone’s last win over Nigeria came in April 2001 during the 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Currently, Sierra Leone are ranked 3rd in Group A, while Nigeria holds 2nd position – one point behind Guinea-Bissau, albeit with one game in hand.
