The Flying Eagles of Nigeria have secured their place in the quarter finals of the 2023 FIFA U20 World Cup following a sensational 2-0 win over hosts Argentina in a packed San Juan stadium.

The seven-time African champions stunned the Argentines, scoring two second half goals to claim a deserving victory over Javier Mascherano’s team, right in front of their beaming supporters.

Nigeria got the lead in the 61st minute when Emmanuel Umeh set up Ibrahim Muhammad with a brilliant pass. The forward placed his effort right under goalkeeper Federico Gerth Gomes, netting the opener only moments after the hour mark.

Substitute Haliru Sarki then added the icing on the cake later on as he doubled the lead for Nigeria in stoppage time. It was his fellow substitute Victor Eletu who initiated the move, beating defender Agustin Giay in a duel right in the box, putting in the cross for Sarki to smash home with a diving header.

Nigeria will now wait for the result between the Ecuador and South Korea game billed for Thursday, to know who their quarter-final opponent will be.

Nigeria’s quarter-final game is slated for Sunday, June 4 at the Estadio Único Madre de Ciudades in Santiago del Estero.
