Ruth Usoro got her 2021 campaign off to a brilliant start at the Texas Tech Corky Classic in the women’s Triple Jump where she broke sand at a massive first-round Personal Best (PB) and National Record (NR) of 14.28m, becoming the first Nigerian woman to surpass 14m indoors!

Her mark is a Texas Tech School Record and doubles as a World Lead (WL). It is also the 2nd all-time on the NCAA Toplist behind Keturah Orji and 5th all-time on the African Indoor Toplist.

She jumped another sound 14.07m in the second round and passed on all of her other 4 attempts. It is also notable that her jump is just 4cm short of the Olympic qualification mark.

Usoro then took to the runway about 3 hours afterwards in the women’s Long Jump where she nailed the win with a Season’s Best (SB) of 6.51m, from her only legal attempt of her three tries.
She finished ahead of Tara Davis who reached 6.24m, while Monae Davis placed 3rd with 6.18m.

Athletics is a special shade of life for me, and my confidence has received a boost since I started out covering the sport from the stands of my home, and now as a Junior Sportswriter with Making of Champions - an opportunity to get better at what I do.
