Nigeria’s U17 team, the Golden Eaglets, fell to the might of their Ivorian counterpart 1-0 in their opening match of the West Africa Football Union (WAFU) B tournament taking place in Lome, Togo.

The match which was played at the Stade Municipal saw the Eaglets carve out the better of the opportunities in the opening intervals of the game.

Cote d’Ivoire, however, grew into the match and were able to hold Nigeria going into the break.

Heading into the second half, the Ivorians got into full stride, testing Nigeria’s goalkeeper numerous times. Their continual efforts paid off in the 75th minute when Mezian Charles strike opened the scoring for them.

The Eaglets will now square up against Ghana in what is a make or mar match on Saturday in order to seal qualification into the next round of the competition.
