Senegal International goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has signed for English Club Chelsea from Rennes for a fee in the region of £25million.

Mendy becomes Chelsea’s eighth signing of the summer and will provide immediate competition for under-fire Kepa Arrizabalaga and Willy Caballero.

The goalkeeper would be following in the footsteps of Petr Cech, who made the same move from Rennes to Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2004.

Chelsea conceded 54 goals in 38 Premier League games last season and manager Frank Lampard wants Mendy to help eradicate such a poor record.

Back in 2014, when he was released by fourth-tier club Cherbourg, he considered leaving football altogether and even found himself queuing at the local job center. Six years later, he’s become one of the best goalkeepers in Ligue 1.

On his journey, he became Marseille’s third-choice goalkeeper and finally got his chance to shine with Reims, where he signed his first professional contract in 2016. He only made his Ligue 1 debut during the 2018/19 season but has undoubtedly been one of the league’s best ever since.
