On this day in history, Nigeria’s finest male long jumper, Yussuf Alli bounded out to a Personal Best (PB) and National Record (NR) of 8.27m, a 3cm improvement on his previous PB to win the men’s Long Jump title at the 1989 edition of the African Championships in Lagos.

Alli was infact the only man to beat the 8m mark as he was followed by his compatriot, Ayodele Aladefa who placed 2nd with 7.89m, while Senegal’s Badara Mbengue got 3rd with 7.88m. Now 31 years after, he remains the NR holder in the event.
