Glory Nathaniel became the latest GOLD medallist for Nigeria at the ongoing 21st African Championships taking place in Asaba, Nigeria, after she claimed victory in the final of the 400m  Hurdles.

Going into the final, Nathaniel who qualified as the fastest in the Heats a day earlier wasn’t the favorite, as the defending Champion from Durban two years ago, Wenda Nel was looking to defend her title.

Pounding the track on lane 3, the 2018 Commonwealth Games 4x400m Silver medallist ran a good first half in the race, putting herself in the lead ahead of South Africa’s Wenda Nel. By the time she got into the home straight, the Nigerian was already home and dry, crossing the line in 55.53s.

The medal becomes the first senior individual medal Nathaniel will be winning for Nigeria, as she had previously only won a Bronze medal at the African Under-20 Championships in Addis-Abeba.
