Making her first Diamond League appearance in Rome, Nigeria’s Oluwatobiloba Amusan raced to a 3rd place finish in the women’s 100m Hurdles, clocking a time of 12.86s.

Having missed an opportunity to make her Diamond League bow in Lausanne last year due to visa issues, Amusan finally got the chance to compete with the big athletes on a Diamond League circuit and she made sure it was one to remember competing in a strong field.

Favourite and World Leader, Brianna McNeal Did Not Finish (DNF) having hit a barrier and stumbling, with Sharika Nelvis capitalizing to win in 12.76s ahead of Danielle Williams who was 2nd in 12.82s.

For Amusan who in April won the Commonwealth title, she would hope to build on this experience to continue improving and being in the mix of the best eight hurdlers in the world.

Amusan becomes the second Nigerian athlete to compete in the Diamond League this season after Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor, and there’s every possibility that that Ese Brume would soon join the Nigerian cast.

Athletics coverage was a discovery, having to move away from regularly writing about Football. Although it was initially daunting, but now being an authority in it makes the past effort worthwhile. From travelling on the same international flight with Nigerian athletes, to knowing you could easily interview: World Record holder Tobi Amusan, then Ese Brume, I have cut my teeth in this beat earning the trust of Athletics sources.
