Mercy Ntia-Obong is the first Nigerian athlete to qualify for the final of an event at the ongoing IAAF World Junior Championships in Poland.

The sprinter sailed through the women’s 100m heats on Wednesday after finishing 2nd behind Poland’s Ewa Swoboda in a time of 11.62s.

She was placed in a stacked heat in the semis, competing against tournament favourites Candace Hill and Khalifa St. Fort, and the American won the race in a Championship Record (CR) of 11.12s, with St. Fort following in 11.22s.

Great Britain’s Hannah Brier was 3rd in a Personal Best (PB) of 11.39s, while Ntia-Obong secured a spot in the final as one of the fastest losers after finishing 4th in 11.58s. She will compete in the final on Thursday evening.
