Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, Nigeria’s record-holder in the men’s Shot Put, has advanced to the finals at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. With a throw of 20.83m in the opening session, Enekwechi advanced, securing 5th place in Group A and 7th overall.
This marks his fifth World Championships campaign, and after narrowly missing the finals in Budapest, redemption for him.
He opened with a throw of 20.83m, followed by 20.71m on his second attempt. His final throw was again 20.83m, placing him comfortably in the top 12.
Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons and Obiageri Amaechi were both in action in the women’s Discus Throw, placing 20th and 33rd, respectively.
Amaechi, competing in Group A, threw 55.69m on her first attempt and 48.82m on her second. This was her second World Championships for Nigeria. While her opening throw placed her 16th in her group, it was not enough to qualify for the final.
Onyekwere, a seasoned competitor, opened with a throw of 59.45m. Unfortunately, she fouled her next two attempts and fell short of the mark needed to qualify, ending her campaign. Since making her World Championships debut in Doha 2019, Onyekwere has now competed in four editions of the biennial event for Nigeria.
