Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, one of the most consistent Shot Put throwers in the world for the 2019 season, will on Thursday, 6th June, make his Diamond League debut at the Golden Gala – Pietro Mennea in the city of Rome.

The Stadio Olimpico would welcome some of the world’s finest throwers, which will include Brazil’s Darlan Romani and Darrell Hill of the United States.

The Commonwealth Games Silver medallist will be the first Nigerian male athlete since 2016 to compete on a Diamond League circuit. Tosin Oke was the country’s last male contender to make an appearance in the series.

Enekwechi has been unbeaten in all competitions this season and has been very consistent over 21m. His best throw in 2019 – 21.77m, was recorded at the first leg of the IAAF World Challenge held in Brazil. It was a Personal Best (PB) that saw him defeat Romani whom he’ll be competing against in Rome.

That mark also doubles as a National Record (NR), and he’ll be looking forward to fending off stiff competition as Poland’s duo of Konrad Bukowiecki and Michal Haratyk, as well as 2015 World Champion, Joe Kovacs, will also be in the mix.

The reigning African Champion will also be gunning for qualification ahead of the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, and will need to record a throw of at least 21.10m.
