Joy won her first senior individual medal for Nigeria at the African Championships.

The Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) has named 77 athletes on its team to the 2018 IAAF Continental Cup scheduled to hold in Ostrava, Czech Republic, from September 8 to 9.

The 21st edition of the African Senior Championships, which was held in Asaba in Delta State, Nigeria, from August 1 to 5, was used to select the African team to the Continental Cup.

Based on the list, South Africa has the highest number of athletes (20) on the team. Nigeria follows with a total of 16 athletes, while Kenya has nine athletes. Morocco has a total of six athletes, while Egypt and Ethiopia both have four athletes on the team. Three athletes from Botswana made the team, and two each from Cote d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Tunisia and Algeria.

Cameroon, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Burundi, Swaziland, Uganda and Djibouti only have one athlete each on the team.

The Nigerian athletes selected to represent the continent in Ostrava are Tobi Amusan (100m, 4x100m), Glory Nathaniel (400m Hurdles, 4x400m), Grace Anigbata (Triple Jump), Temilola Ogunrinde (Hammer), Kelechi Nwanaga (Javelin), Blessing Okagbare (4x100m), Joy Udo-Gabriel (4x100m), Rosemary Chukwuma (4x100m) and Ese Brume (Long Jump).

Others are Chioma Onyekwere (Discus), Divine Oduduru (200m), Abejoye Oyeniyi (110m Hurdles) and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi (Shot Put).

Yinka Ajayi and Mercy Ntia-Obong were named as reserves in the women’s 4x400m and 4x100m relay teams respectively, while Chidi Okezie was selected as a reserve in the men’s 4x400m.

The GOLD-winning teams in the men and women’s 4x400m relays from Asaba weren’t included in the list. Kenya took GOLD in the men’s 4x400m, while the Nigerian quartet of Patience Okon-George, Abike Egbeniyi, Folashade Abugan and Ajayi did same in the women’s category.

The athletes listed for the women’s 4x400m in Ostrava are Caster Semenya, Glory Nathaniel and Christine Botlogetswe, while South Africa’s Phora Thapelo, Baboloki Thebe and Nijel Amos were named on the men’s 4x400m squad for Africa.
