Nigeria’s 4x100m women team got the home crowd on their feet when they struck GOLD in the final of the event at the 21st African Championships taking place in Asaba.

Joy Udo-Gabriel who won a Bronze medal in the women’s 100m at the Championships, ran a good first leg to hand over to Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor who took the second leg just as she did at the Commonwealth Games in Australia.

The seven-time Nigerian champion maintained the lead for Nigeria before handing the baton to Tobi Amusan. Running the third leg, Amusan increased the lead by about 10 meters, thereby leaving the Ivorians with an enormous task to catch up with the host nation.

By the time Rosemary Chukwuma took over the baton from Amusan, Nigeria were home and dry as African Champion in the 100m, Marie Josee Ta Lou tried her best to catch up with Chukwuma. Chukwuma held on to anchor Nigeria to victory in a time of 43.77s.

Ivory Coast took home the Silver medal as they posted a time of 44.40s, while Kenya placed 3rd to claim the Bronze medal.
