Team Nigeria added six medals to its total medal tally on Day 10 of the Commonwealth Games taking place in Australia, with the Wrestling team accounting for half of the count.

Aminat Adeniyi was the only GOLD medallist on the day as she defeated Canada’s Michelle Fazzari in the 62kg class of the Women’s Wrestling event after the latter retired from the bout via an injury.

Also, Melvin Bibo secured for himself a Silver medal in the Men’s Freestyle 86kg, having lost in his bout to Pakistan’s Muhammad Inam who won by 3-0 Classification points (victory by points), while Miesinnei Genesis clinched a Bronze medal after she defeated Australia’s Rupinder Kaur 10-0 (victory by technical superiority) in the Women’s Wrestling 50kg.

The Athletics event also provided for two medals – a Silver and Bronze respectively, with the 4x400m and 4x100m women’s teams responsible for both.

The 4x400m team retained the Silver medal they won at the last Commonwealth Games after the quartet of Patience Okon-George, Glory Nathaniel, Praise Idamadudu and Yinka Ajayi finished 2nd in a time of 3:25.29, as the Jamaicans retained the title they won in 2014 while running a time of 3:24.00.

Seven-time Nigerian Champion Blessing Okagbare teamed up with the trio of Joy Udo-Gabriel, Tobi Amusan and Rosemary Chukwuma to win Bronze for the 4x100m team. The team clocked a time of 42.75s. The English team took home the GOLD medal in a National Record (NR) of 42.46s.

It was however a bad day in the office for the men’s 4x100m team as the the quartet of Ogho-Oghene Egwero, Usheoritse Itsekiri, Emmanuel Arowolo and Seye Ogunlewe couldn’t get the baton round & Did Not Finish (DNF the race), also getting disqualified for a lane violation in the exchange.

The England team won the GOLD medal in 38.15s as South Africa with a National Record (NR) of 38.24s, won Silver ahead of Jamaica who got Bronze in 38.35s.

Another medal winner on the day was Faith Obazuaye. The Para-athlete, who has breezed past her opponents without dropping a set in the competition, clinched a Silver medal for herself after losing 3-1 to Australia’s Melissa Tapper in the final of the Women’s TT6-10.

Aruna Quadri once again proved to be the albatross of the Indians in the men’s Singles Table Tennis event at the Games, as the top seeded player brushed aside Sharath Achanta 4-0 (12-10,11-9,11-9 and 11-7), to set up a meeting with Singapore’s Ning Gao in the Final.
