Nigeria’s Esther Oyema retained her GOLD medal from Glasgow 2014 as she smashed the World Record (WR) in the women’s Lightweight category of the Para Powerlifting event on Tuesday, while teammate Lucy Ejike won Silver in the same category at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.

Oyema, who has a weight class of 48.10kg, outclassed the rest of the field to win Nigeria’s second GOLD at the 2018 Games after securing a WR lift of 131kg on her second attempt, having failed to lift the weight the first time. She had also successfully lifted 125kg in her first attempt of the day, and amassed a total of 141.6 points.

Ejike on the other hand, had a clean lift of 133kg on her first attempt but was unable to lift 139kg on both attempts. She secured a total of 134.1 points in 2nd place, while Zoe Newson of England finished 3rd with 106 points.

Roland Ezuruike kicked off the GOLD rush for Nigeria after winning the men’s Lightweight category earlier in the day. Nigeria now has a total of six medals – two GOLD and four Silver medals.
