Blessing Okagbare and Ese Brume were the two athletes who competed for Nigeria on Day 6 of the IAAF World Championships in London.

Brume, who had finished 5th at the Olympic Games a year ago, was hoping to go one better this time around, but it wasn’t to be.

Drawn in Group A of the women’s Long Jump qualification, Brume jumped a distance of 6.16m on her first attempt. She however improved her mark on her next two attempts, leaping to jumps of 6.29m and 6.38m respectively.

The 2014 Commonwealth champion however, wasn’t able to make into the final as her best jump was 8cm shy of the qualification mark. She finished 10th in her pool and 17th overall.

It was a different scenario for her counterpart, Blessing Okagbare. Okagbare, who missed out on a place in the women’s 100m final a few days back, was looking to make amends in the Long Jump, and she made it into the final with ease.

The Moscow 2013 Long Jump Silver medallist was only able to manage two valid jumps. Her second attempt, a 6.51m jump, was just enough to put her name amongst the finalists.

The mark saw her finish 2nd in her group and 8th overall. It was even made better by the fact that she finished above former World Champion Brittney Reese.

The women’s Long Jump final comes on Friday, August 11th.
