On Day 7 of the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, Team Nigeria had more reasons to be cheerful, with the country increasing its medal tally by winning a GOLD medal on Wednesday.

Josephine Orji did not just win GOLD in her +86kg Powerlifting event, she did so in style, breaking the World Record and setting a new one of 154kg to take the victory.

That Orji’s win took Nigeria’s overall medal haul to eleven, with Powerlifting alone accounting for nine medals, and the other coming from Athletics.

The other competition Team Nigeria participated in was the men’s Team – Class 4-5 Table Tennis, with the duo of Chinedu Emmanuel Nick and Ahmed Koleosho beating their Polish opponents in round 1 of the competition.

Nick and Koleosho defeated Rafla Lis and Kryzsztof Zylka 2-1, with the Nigerians winning the first match 3-0, losing the 2nd one by 3-2 and rallying round to win the 3rd game 3-1.

However not having the luxury of bringing in a fresh third competitor, the two Nigerian players lost out to their Turkish counterparts by 2-0. Both matches were won by the Turks who took the first one 3-0, with Koleosho battling hard in his match up against Ali Ozturk which eventually ended 3-1.

Athletics coverage was a discovery, having to move away from regularly writing about Football. Although it was initially daunting, but now being an authority in it makes the past effort worthwhile. From travelling on the same international flight with Nigerian athletes, to knowing you could easily interview: World Record holder Tobi Amusan, then Ese Brume, I have cut my teeth in this beat earning the trust of Athletics sources.
