Ese Brume might have not won a medal, but at the moment she has arguably had Nigeria’s best performance in Track and Field at the Rio Olympics after finishing 5th in the women’s Long Jump final.

The 2014 Commonwealth Champion was right in the mix of things, jumping her best mark of 6.81m to challenge for a medal, although it was not enough to get her on the podium.

Brume wasn’t given much of a chance to even make the final, but after jumping 6.67m during the qualification and finishing 3rd in group B on Tuesday, it was obvious she would challenge the big ladies.

Unfortunately for her African and Nigeria fans, who would have loved to see in action, not even one of her jumps was shown on live television considering that those who finished below her were seen competing.

The event was won by 2015 World Champion, Tianna Bartoletta who added an Olympic GOLD to that accolade, jumping to a Personal Best of 7.17m in her 5th attempt.

Bartoletta narrowly defeated her compatriot Brittney Reese, who gave up the title after finishing 2nd with a mark of 7.15m. Ivana Spanovic won the Bronze after jumping to a new National Record of 7.08m.

For Brume she will be quite happy how 2016 has been for her, winning the African title in Durban and setting a new PB of 6.83m at the Akure Golden League. No doubt she will get better and could possibly hit 7m soon.

Athletics coverage was a discovery, having to move away from regularly writing about Football. Although it was initially daunting, but now being an authority in it makes the past effort worthwhile. From travelling on the same international flight with Nigerian athletes, to knowing you could easily interview: World Record holder Tobi Amusan, then Ese Brume, I have cut my teeth in this beat earning the trust of Athletics sources.
