Fans at the Zawisza Stadium were on Friday treated to an exciting spectacle at the World U20 Championships taking place in Poland, courtesy of a very competitive field in the men’s High Jump event.

Competition commenced with the bar at 2.05m, and all but one athlete in the field of 12, cleared the barrier. To underline the depth of the field, Turkey’s Alperen Acet who finished in 12th position, ended with a clearance of 2.14m.

So impressive was Cuba’s Luis Enrique Zayas that he cleared eight successive heights before retiring at 2.29m, settling for GOLD with his World U20 Lead of 2.27m, becoming only the second Cuban to win the event at that level since World Record (WR) holder Javier Sotomayor achieved that feat in 1986 with a mark of 2.25m.

USA’s Darius Carbin won Silver in a Personal Best (PB) of 2.25m, which he cleared at his third attempt. World Indoor Record holder at senior level, Mutaz Barshim already has a likely successor in Mohamat Allamine Hamdi who was also very impressive, taking the Bronze medal, also in a PB of 2.23m.
