Margaret Bamgbose has run the fastest time by a Nigerian female quarter-miler this season, running a new Personal Best (PB) of 51.11s to finish 2nd in her 400m race at the Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Championships last weekend.

In April, Bamgbose ran a Season’s Best (SB) of 52.56s to win at the Sun Angel Track Classic in Tempe, Arizona.

She has gone on to better that time, running the fastest time of all heats to make the final in 52.29s. Shakima Wimbley won the race clocking a time of 50.90s, with Aiyanna Stiverne finishing 3rd in 52.08s.

With her new PB, Bamgbose, a student of University of Notre Dame, was able to break her own School Record of 51.37s set last year in Jacksonville, USA.

Prior to her 400m race, she also competed in the women’s 200m where she finished 4th, clocking 23.44s. Wimbley did the double with a time of 22.56s to add to her 400m win, and Deja Parrish 2nd in 23.08s as Aiyanna Stiverne finished 3rd in 23.22s.

Considering how well she is performing, Bamgbose could bolster Nigeria’s 4x400m relay team, having been part of the quartet that finished 4th at the World Indoor Championships in Portland this year, starting the race for her country.

With Folashade Abugan and Omolora Omotoso making a return to the track this season, Bamgbose could be the top challenger to Patience Okon George and Regina George for the National title. Who knows, she could run a sub-51 very soon!

Athletics coverage was a discovery, having to move away from regularly writing about Football. Although it was initially daunting, but now being an authority in it makes the past effort worthwhile. From travelling on the same international flight with Nigerian athletes, to knowing you could easily interview: World Record holder Tobi Amusan, then Ese Brume, I have cut my teeth in this beat earning the trust of Athletics sources. Formerly the Content Manager-Sports at Ringier media Nigeria, Chris is a Senior Sports writer, Photographer & Community manager at Making of Champions.
