Fabian Edoki could be the breakout Nigerian junior athlete this year if he continues on the impressive path he has been on since last month.

It was the same success story for Edoki at the Winston-Salem North Carolina, National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Indoor Championships in the United States, where he won the Long Jump event.

Edoki, representing South Plains, reached a distance of 7.52m to win the Long Jump GOLD and help his school get all ten points in the competition. He defeated Denroc Dixon who was 2nd in 7.39m, and Mohammed Abubakar who placed 3rd with a mark of 7.34m.

Interestingly, Edoki led from his very first jump which was 7.34m, and had to cement the win with his last jump of 7.52m, which didn’t match his Personal Best (PB) of 7.90m.

Just last week, Edoki who also competes in the Triple Jump, got listed as one of the most outstanding athletes of the year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

With his fine form and good jumps, Edoki will have his sights on improving further to even 8m. Not only will he be vying with Theddus Okpara on who Nigeria’s best Long Jumper would be, he could also be the long term successor to National Record holder, Yusuf Alli.

Athletics coverage was a discovery, having to move away from regularly writing about Football. Although it was initially daunting, but now being an authority in it makes the past effort worthwhile. From travelling on the same international flight with Nigerian athletes, to knowing you could easily interview: World Record holder Tobi Amusan, then Ese Brume, I have cut my teeth in this beat earning the trust of Athletics sources.
