The stage is set, and the Beijing Bird Nest stadium is already buzzing with activities for the 2015 World Championships.

Over 2000 athletes from all over the world will be competing in this year’s edition of the biennial Championships. Nigeria will be represented by a very lean team of 17 athletes.

With the Championships commencing in a couple of hours, two Nigerian athletes: Uhunoma Osazuwa and Miles Ukaoma will both be in action in day one.

Last month, Osazuwa set a new Heptathlon National Record of 6106 points which she will be looking at surpassing when she starts her series of seven events with the 100m hurdles. She will be competing in heat three, starting in lane 2 and squaring up against European indoor champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson . Her event comes up by 9am local time (2am Nigerian time).

In the afternoon session, Miles Ukaoma will be the next athlete to fly Nigeria’s flag when he steps out in the 400m hurdles. Just like Osazuwa, Ukaoma will also be in heat three, starting in a very difficult lane 9. However, Ukaoma who ran an impressive 48.84s to win the national title in July, will be eyeing qualification to the next round.

Ukaoma’s race comes up by 18.35pm local time (11.35am Nigerian time). Both Nigerian athletes will be hoping to get off on a good start as they aim to give other Nigerian athletes a huge boost.

Athletics coverage was a discovery, having to move away from regularly writing about Football. Although it was initially daunting, but now being an authority in it makes the past effort worthwhile. From travelling on the same international flight with Nigerian athletes, to knowing you could easily interview: World Record holder Tobi Amusan, then Ese Brume, I have cut my teeth in this beat earning the trust of Athletics sources.
