Glory Nyenke set PBs in the 200m and 400m.

Not only was it a Personal Best (PB) for her, but also Making of Champions’ (MoC) Glory Nyenke has hit the qualifying mark in the women’s 200m for the African Junior Championships (AJC) later this month in Algeria.

Nyenke gave it a good shot at last Saturday’s AFN/Dynamic Solutions meet in Abuja, crossing the line in 24.73s to meet the qualifying standard of 24.74s which makes her eligible to compete for the event.

In a race won by Nigeria’s 2016 World Junior Championships representative, Mercy Ntia-Obong in 24.53s and Favour Nwokeukwu finishing 2nd in 24.68s, Nyenke came fast from the block, giving a good account of herself and could have even gone faster than she did if not she slowed a bit just as she approached the finish line.

Nyenke is now the second MoC athlete to qualify for the AJC later this month, joining Joy Udo Gabriel who ran an astonishing 11.65s in the 100m, and also qualifying for the 200m when she crossed the line in 24.26s to finish 2nd behind Isoken Igbinosun.

While Nyenke also ran a PB in the 400m clocking 55.87s in her heat, she narrowly missed out on the qualifying time of 55.44s, and she will be hoping to have another chance to attain that just before the Championships.

Athletics coverage was a discovery, having to move away from regularly writing about Football. Although it was initially daunting, but now being an authority in it makes the past effort worthwhile. From travelling on the same international flight with Nigerian athletes, to knowing you could easily interview: World Record holder Tobi Amusan, then Ese Brume, I have cut my teeth in this beat earning the trust of Athletics sources. Formerly the Content Manager-Sports at Ringier media Nigeria, Chris is a Senior Sports writer, Photographer & Community manager at Making of Champions.
