Nigeria’s Divine Oduduru did not make it to the men’s 200m final after finishing 7th in heat 2 of the semifinals at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Oduduru competed in a stacked heat that had Usain Bolt and Andre Grasse all competing in the race. Bolt easily won the race clocking a Season’s Best (SB) of 19.78s and De Grasse taking the second automatic qualification spot, running a new Canadian National Record of 19.80s.

Running from lane 7, Oduduru clocked 20.59s to cross the finish line, which incidentally was not enough for him to make the next final.

Oduduru’s heat was so fast that the last two losers spot came from it, with the duo of Adam Gemili who clocked 20.08s to finish 3rd and Ramil Guliyev who ran a time of 20.09s, both qualifying for the final.

It was the second time at the Rio Olympics that Oduduru will be running against Bolt, after the pair met in the first round heats on Tuesday

It may not have gone the way Oduduru would have wanted, but he leaves the Olympics with a new Personal Best (PB) and will no doubt improve more in the coming weeks.

Athletics coverage was a discovery, having to move away from regularly writing about Football. Although it was initially daunting, but now being an authority in it makes the past effort worthwhile. From travelling on the same international flight with Nigerian athletes, to knowing you could easily interview: World Record holder Tobi Amusan, then Ese Brume, I have cut my teeth in this beat earning the trust of Athletics sources.
