Rio 2016 Olympics, Bottrop Germany
Kim Collins defies his age and still runs very well at age 40

Just when you think Kim Collins will stop running, he defies logic and strings up an incredible feat that leave fans in awe, wondering how he still does it at the age of 40.

Collins a former World Champion, stormed to victory on Sunday in the men’s 100m clocking a time of 9.93s (+1.9) in Bottrop, Germany thereby becoming the first man in history to run under 10s at 40. In fact he broke his former Masters World Record of 9.96s which he set two years ago, equally setting a new National Record (NR) for his country St Kitts & Nevis.

America’s Joe Morris finished 2nd in the race in 10.15s, with Great Britain’s Adam Gemili who is making a comeback from an injury clocking 10.19s to place 3rd.

Collins has an enviable record of 11 World indoor and outdoor Championships appearances, and he has won 5 medals in the process.

His time moves him up to 2nd in the 2016 rankings this season behind Femi Ogunode who has the World Lead (WL) of 9.91s, with Justin Gatlin and Yohan Blake 3rd and 4th in the rankings with 9.94s and 9.95s respectively.

At the 2016 World indoor Championships in Portland, Collins got to the final of the men’s 60m, finishing 8th after running an impressive 6.54s to win his heat in round one.

Going to Rio Olympics, he might not be the favourite to win but there is a possibility that he could do the unthinkable and qualify for the final. That would a big achievement for someone his age.

Athletics coverage was a discovery, having to move away from regularly writing about Football. Although it was initially daunting, but now being an authority in it makes the past effort worthwhile. From travelling on the same international flight with Nigerian athletes, to knowing you could easily interview: World Record holder Tobi Amusan, then Ese Brume, I have cut my teeth in this beat earning the trust of Athletics sources. Formerly the Content Manager-Sports at Ringier media Nigeria, Chris is a Senior Sports writer, Photographer & Community manager at Making of Champions.
